Advice Columnist Pauline Friedman Phillips 'Dear Abby' Dies

Longtime newspaper advice columnist Pauline Friedman Phillips -- who wrote Dear Abby under the name Abigail Van Buren -- has died at age 94.

Her publicist confirmed to the Associated Press that Phillips died Wednesday after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

PICS: Star Sightings

Since her family revealed in 2002 that Phillips had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, her daughter, Jeanne Phillips (pictured above), has been the sole author for the syndicated Dear Abby column.

Phillips' column competed for decades with the advice column of Ann Landers, which was written by her twin sister, Esther Friedman Lederer, who died in June 2002.

Zooey Deschanel TCA Winter Press Tour Interview 2013

Season two of Fox's New Girl has so far taken audiences deeper into the weird lives of star Zooey Deschanel and her three roommates (and model best friend), while teasing but not quite pursuing a possible love-connection between Zooey's character Jess, and the ever-cynical Nick Miller, played by Jake Johnson.

Also from TCA: 2013's Six Best New Shows

The pair is seemingly always exchanging undeniable chemistry, only to find themselves pursuing other people. While this frustrating cycle has led to some great guest stars like David Walton and Olivia Munn, Zooey and Jake hinted to ET at the 2013 TCA Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, CA that the conclusion of season two will finally see Jess and Nick's relationship start to heat up.

"I think it's been split," Jake said of the fan reaction to his character's relationship with Olivia Munn, adding, "whenever Nick dates anybody that's not Jess... it's split."
Adding support for the get-together, Zooey herself.

"I like the chemistry and I think that they have kind of an amazing thing going," said the actress. "I don't know if they're ready for each other yet, but I want them to get together."

That's when Jake alluded to the episodes to come.

"The writers are naturally going there. Starting to put these two together more and seeing what happens.... The end of season two gets pretty heavy with Nick and Jess."

While it's good that it doesn't seem like the show's writers will keep fans waiting too much longer for the Jess and Nick romance that virtually everybody wants to happen, does this signal trouble for David Walton's recurring role as Jess' boyfriend?

While commenting on how Walton is "so handsome," Zooey did add that "[Jess is] always kind of messing up a little bit."

"That's kind of the nature of the show, is that everybody screws up," added Jake.

In addition to Jess and Nick's budding relationship, the co-stars dished on guests we can expect to see in the coming months on New Girl. Names included Brooklyn Decker, Nate Corddry, The Social Network actress Brenda Song, and former Law & Order detective Dennis Farina. Who knows what's in store for the actors, but Zooey and Jake do hint that the remainder of season two will feature a horse-track, a murder-mystery, and the return of the roommates' fan-favorite fictitious drinking game 'True American.' Sounds like the rest of the season promises to be as crazy as it is hilarious.

2. 'The Voice' Coaches Dish on New Season

It looks like Adam Levine is off the hook for the upcoming season of The Voice, as Blake Shelton has a new man crush on Usher.

During the Television Critics Association Press Tour, the singers revealed that Shelton's uncomfortable advances towards Levine -- done in jest -- have now been turned to the newest male addition on the coaching panel.

"He's left me for Usher now," Levine joked. "So he gets to spend the season making Usher feel uncomfortable."

"And I think I'm doing a really good job of that, by the way," Shelton added. "I've said and done about everything that crosses the line."

While Shelton's focused on Usher, the rest of the fellas seem to have eyes for Shakira, who will also be joining the show for the upcoming season.

"She's so sexy," said host Carson Daly.

"She's a sweetheart," Levine agreed.

Season four of The Voice premieres March 25 on NBC. Click here for the panel's new interviews!

3. Miranda Lambert Defends Her Chris Brown Comments

Country crooner Miranda Lambert has no intention of retracting her statements made this past year about R&B singer Chris Brown and his domestic abuse in 2009 towards his on-again, off-again girlfriend Rihanna.

At the Grammy Awards this past year, Lambert, 29, tweeted following Brown's performance, writing: "He beat on a girl. not cool that we act like that didn't happen."

"I didn't feel right about not saying something. The loudmouth that I am, I say what I think," she told Redbook magazine of the tweet. "I wanted everyone to know that I don't agree with the message it's sending to young women."

Adding to her opinion of Brown, Lambert, who is married to The Voice judge Blake Shelton, said, "It's not okay. At all. To be celebrated after doing something like that. I don't think it's right, I never will, and I will stand by what I said till the day that I die."

4. Diane Lane After Husband Josh Brolin's Arrest

As news broke of Josh Brolin's New Year's Day arrest, ET caught up with Brolin's wife Diane Lane at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, where she appeared sans her husband.

Lane arrived cheerful and relaxed alongside her Nights of Rodanthe co-star Richard Gere, whom she presented the Chairman's Award.

"[Brolin] is actually with my wife [actress Carey Lowell] tonight, so everything's fine," joked Gere when asked how Brolin felt about missing the event.

"We have an arrangement," Lane kidded. "It's all good."

Seth MacFarlane Oscar Nomination Ceremony Hitler Joke

Seth MacFarlane was his usual irreverent self this morning while announcing this year's Oscar nominees and ET's Rob Marciano caught up with the Academy Awards host to get an explanation of his much-buzzed-about Hitler joke and to find out what viewers can expect during this year's show!

The Family Guy creator explained that he's "thrilled," but also somewhat "befuddled" to have been chosen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to host the prestigious show. "Maybe they're going to wake up and realize they got the wrong guy," he joked. "But I'm kind of surfin' the wave of it all and I'm going to try not to screw it up."

MacFarlane also explained this joke he made during the ceremony, "I read Amour was co-produced in Austria and Germany. The last time Austria and Germany got together and co-produced something it was Hitler, but this is much better -- highly recommended."

Speaking to Rob about his controversial quip, MacFarlane responds to whether producers had approved the joke beforehand. "You know, I don't know that it was, I think we kind of slipped that in at the last minute," he said. "We kind of forgot we were on TV, and one thing led to another, and now it's too late!"

When asked whether this means he'll also forget he's on TV while actually hosting the 85th Academy Awards on February 24, MacFarlane said that's a real possibility. "I hope so, yeah, I think that will be fantastic."

Watch the video to also hear MacFarlane dish on his opening number and to get some insight from Academy Awards Executive Producers Craig
Zadan and Neil Meron on how they plan to make this year's show different from those in
the past.

Michael J Fox NBC Comedy 2013

NBC brought their new and returning hits to The Television Critics Association Tour in Pasadena, CA this morning and one of the biggest headlines involved the content of Michael J. Fox's TV comeback.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the TV icon had his half-hour comedy pitch greenlit to series based solely off an idea (a rarity in this industry). This morning, Jennifer Salke, President of NBC Entertainment, detailed what the show would look like.

RELATED - Cher is Coming to TV!

Inspired by Fox's life, the still-untitled Fall comedy revolves around a father and a husband and family man who is grappling with his disease. Although his character is a newscaster, not an actor, who had resigned following his diagnosis. But thanks to a new drug, feels healthy and ready to return to work.

The story of the pilot is Fox's character coming back to the news with a special interest story and lot of great fun guest casting, Salke said. "At the end of the day, [Fox] approaches his work and his life with a lot of irreverence. He laughs at himself."

Remains to be seen if America laughs as well.

Jennie Garth Talks Excruciating Pain of Peter Facinelli divorce

It's been nine months since Jennie Garth separated from Twilight star Peter Facinelli after 11 years of marriage, and in a new interview with Health magazine, Jennie reveals that she went through "excruciating pain" from the split, calling certain moments "immobilizing."

"When I'm in excruciating pain, like with what I've been through with my breakup and that grief and loss that's just immobilizing, it helps to remember that it only lasts for 13 to 15 minutes, max. And then it's over," she says about dealing with the split. "Your mind is ready to go to something else. You might come back to it, but it helps to just know that that pain is not going to last forever."

Garth also reveals to the magazine how she shed a whopping 30 pounds from her five-foot-five frame in 2012, after years of fad dieting that backfired.

Video: Jennie Garth on Her Dramatic Slim Down

"My biggest regret is putting my body through fad diets: Atkins, cleanses, the hCG diet. I lost like 18 pounds, but it came right back," she shares. "The worst was fasting with colonics for three or four days. It was the most horrifying experience ever!"

Among her health tips? Weigh yourself every morning and build up self-confidence.

"I put Post-it notes with quotes or reminders of my awesomeness on my mirror. My favorite is: 'You are enough.' So often we walk around and feel inferior -- not smart enough or thin enough. It means that I'm enough exactly the way I am."

ET Flashback: Eddie Murphy Talks '48 HRS.'

"Roxaaaaanne!" After getting raves for his hilarious sketch comedy on Saturday Night Live in the early '80s, Eddie Murphy turned the spotlight on a movie career in 1982 with his first big-screen effort: 48 HRS. ET's Mary Hart sat down with the funnyman in the days before the movie broke big with a revealing interview in which he got candid about stepping out of his comfort zone and getting serious onscreen.

Video: Eddie Murphy's Funny Friends Honor Actor

"I'm looking forward to the movie coming out, and if my acting looks bad in the movie, which I don't think it will, I'm covered: It's like, 'Well, his forte is in comedy,'" he said with a laugh, adding faithfully, "If you're in a catatonic state, [director Walter Hill] can go in the editing room and make you win awards."

Released 30 years ago this month, the sidesplitting action-comedy finds Eddie in fine form as Reggie Hammond, a man doing time for a robbery who is plucked from behind bars to help hard-edged cop Jack Cates (played by Nick Nolte) nab a pair of vicious cop killers. The pair have 48 hours to get the bad guys -- if they don't kill each other first!

Comparing Nolte to a "big brother," Eddie complimented, "Nick's a great guy to work with and a real good actor, real intense actor -- he makes you act."

Video: Emmy Flashback: Eddie Murphy '83

Of course, Eddie's outdoor interview had its share of sidetracked comedic moments, not to mention his trademark laugh, and a few moments in which he poked fun at Mary. Distracted at one point, he observed, "You see those two butterflies just now, trying to get with it?" Watch and enjoy a slice of the veteran comedy star in his prime: humble and hilarious.
