From Exorcist to The French Connection, William Friedkin's Finest Secrets Revealed

William Friedkin earned a Best Director Oscar for his riveting 1971 film The French Connection and earned another nomination for changing the face of horror with The Exorcist. Now, with his latest controversial film Killer Joe out on Blu-ray, the legendary director revisits some of his greatest films for ETonline and reveals the secrets behind them; discusses his thoughts on Hollywood's remake fever; and gets candid about what frightens the man who helmed one of the scariest films ever made.

On the Possibility of an 'Exorcist' Sequel/Prequel, and the Real-Life Case that Inspired the Film:

"[I've been asked often], and I won't. … I've said everything that could be said about demonic possession and exorcism. I have not even seen any of the sequels, not even [William Peter] Blatty's [Exorcist III]. I would not do a prequel or a sequel, absolutely not, under no circumstances and for no amount of money. But if I could find something new to say about demonic possession, I would do a film about that. I believe, for example, the only thing that explains this kid in Connecticut is demonic possession. … "You can go and look for every goddamn reason on Earth – [James] Holmes, the kid in Colorado [that opened fire during The Dark Knight Rises screening], all of these people, Charles Whitman [the 1966 University of Texas tower sniper] – it's the devil, man. Whatever that means to you. There is a force of evil in the world."

"I know that the actual case that Blatty based his novel on was real. The 1949 case in Silver Spring, MD, where the exorcism was done at Alexian Brothers Hospital in St. Louis, all of those events happened. I read the diaries of the doctors and nurses who were involved, and the patients who were in other rooms when this was going on, and the priests. I know that something happened there that was beyond the understanding of psychiatry or internal medicine, so I made that film accordingly. … It was a boy, not a 13-year-old girl [like in the movie]. I know a great deal about this 14-year-old boy -- I know his name, I know where he is now. I've never revealed it. The church keeps very close tabs on him to this day, and as far as any of us know, he has no recollection of what happened to him when he was 14. … I spoke to the relatives of the boy, especially to his aunt, and they gave me some details that weren't in Blatty's novel, which I put in the film."

On What Scares Him:

"Once I did a documentary about El Cordobes, the Bullfighter … I asked him that question. I asked him if he was afraid of death, because when you go in the bull ring you're constantly facing death, and he said, 'No, I'm not afraid of death. Only life scares me.' One of the things that scares me is losing my own self-control. Most of the things that frighten me are sort of self-generated, or the sort of thing that happened in Connecticut to happen to one of my loved ones. Not the unexplained, but the unexpected."
"There are a handful of movies that still scare me. The shower scene and a couple of the other scenes in Psycho, the first Alien I thought was terrifying, Diabolique, a Japanese film called Yojimbo, Rosemary's Baby I thought was frightening because it made it so real and possible. These I find really are terrifying examples in cinema."

On the Flaws of the MPAA Ratings System:

"I do not target Killer Joe and other film's I've made to young people, young teenagers, even. They shouldn't come and see it. But that's up to the parents. I mean, J.J. Abrams told me that his father took him to see The Exorcist when he was eight. And I asked it if it ruined his life and he said, 'Well, obviously not.' So some people are ready and some aren't, but what the Ratings Board has failed to do, which I think should be their primary mission, is to separate adult content from out-and-out filth. … The NC-17 is definitely a Scarlet Letter, there's no question about it. It's limiting. Most of the theater chains in the country won't play an NC-17 film."

On Stealing Shots in 'The French Connection' – including that Classic Car Chase:

"On The French Connection, I never had any permits to shoot anywhere. We just went out and did it, including the chase over 26 blocks in Brooklyn. We had no permits to do any of that stuff. We never would have gotten permits then. It was simply pointless to try and get permission to do what we did. We got permission to shoot on the elevated train. We did get permission to do that, but if we hadn't, I was prepared to steal that."

"We were able to steal everything, including the traffic jam I created on the Brooklyn Bridge. But I had all these off-duty cops with me, including the two cops who made the French Connection case, Eddie Egan and Sonny Gross. And they were around with a lot of their friends, and I used them in scenes, all these off-duty cops, and they were around with their badges in case there were unsuspecting cops – and there were -- who tried to flag us down or stop us."

Filming 'To Live and Die in L.A.' was By the Book:

"[Unlike The French Connection], when I did To Live and Die in L.A., I got permission for everything, including shutting down the Vincent Thomas Bridge for a few hours on weekends only, from like six in the morning to 10 or 11. So that shot over several days because we had to avoid rush hours."

If 'Sorcerer' Could Be Made Again the Same Way:

"It would be done all CGI [today]. I had a great production designer named John Box who worked for [director] David Lean. … We came up together with a way of engineering that bridge so that it was safe, that it looked lethal, but was actually very safely constructed so there were no accidents -- knock wood. But any time you attempt something like that there's always the unexpected."

"I was obsessed with [the movie] and driven to make it. I didn't do it as a remake of Wages of Fear, I did it as a new version. Like, there's a wonderful production on Broadway now of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf starring [Killer Joe writer] Tracy Letts. It's a big smash hit, and not because it's a remake -- it's another version. Any time someone does a production of Hamlet it's not a remake, it's a new interpretation with different actors. … So I thought that Wages of Fear could be reinterpreted for a modern audience, because it dealt with certain truths. These characters were four strangers marooned in a desperate situation, hiding out from retribution, who had to either cooperate or die -- and that seems to be the world's condition today. … If we don't all cooperate, like if the countries in the Middle East don't make peace with Israel, they'll all be destroyed. It's mutually assured destruction. And that's what Sorcerer and Wages of Fear are about."

What He Thinks about Remakes Today and His Own Films Being Remade:

"Well, a lot of my films have been ripped off without even accreditation. One of the Lethal Weapon films just took the chase from To Live and Die in L.A. and recreated it with some of the same people. You know, I don't have any problem with that, especially if it's well done, because I know that films beget other films. I started out learning from other films. I never went to film school. I certainly borrowed ideas from them. I mean, I didn't steal from them, but I was influenced by them, or they pushed certain buttons. I never made a film like any of the films that inspired me. … On the other hand, I think that there is a paucity of ideas today, and so [Hollywood goes] back to what worked before, and generally they're right -- it works again, because audiences love what's familiar. They're much less tolerant of something new. They'll give a lot more space to something that's familiar [compared] to something that challenges their expectations. … It is what it is, and there's no reason to question that or to fight that. Audiences get the films they want, and they go to them in vast, vast numbers, and in the old competition between fantasy and reality, fantasy wins hands down, because people do want to be entertained and not challenged."

Dexter Season Seven Finale Must Rewatch Moment of The Week

Every week, ETonline selects a scene that is so magical, it demands watching, and re-watching, from fans and non-fans alike. This week, that honor goes to Dexter!

SPOILER ALERT!!!

All season long, Jennifer Carpenter has been delivering career-best work as her character, Debra Morgan, grappled with the internal conflicts that arose from learning her brother was a serial killer. She was not only forced to come to terms with that unfathomable admission, but decide how to reconcile her position as Lieutenant, her moral compass and her feelings for Dexter given the knowledge of his Dark Passenger.

VIDEO - Jennifer Carpenter Talks Dexter & Love with ETonline

As if that wasn't enough emotion for one person to juggle, Debra was backed into a corner during the last half of season seven in attempting to keep Captain LaGuerta (played by Lauren Velez) off Dex's scent when her search for The Bay Harbor Butcher was renewed.

All of those plotlines came to a tension-filled head in the closing minutes of Sunday's season finale as Dexter embraced his serial killer instincts and set out to murder someone who didn't fit Harry's code. Debra, not knowing what emotional horrors awaited her, was forced to choose between her brother and her boss, delivering the pinnacle of Carpenter's season-long performance.

VIDEO - Last Week's Must (Re)Watch Moment: Parenthood

In the end, Debra took away Dexter's choice and murdered LaGuerta herself! That shock (for the audience, for Dexter and, certainly, for LaGuerta) was followed by a such a powerfully organic full-body breakdown from Carpenter that it should come as no surprise the moment wasn't scripted.

In a post-finale interview, Dexter producer Scott Buck revealed, "We did something very unusual, that we'd never done before. After the scene was essentially finished, we let the cameras roll. It was in that moment that Debra runs to LaGuerta after having shot her. That was not scripted. To me, that was the most overpowering moment. It was difficult to watch."

Difficult? Yes. Beautiful? Certainly. The week's most important TV moment? Without a doubt.

Downton Abbey Cast Talk Shirley MacLaine

On January 6, Shirley MacLaine comes to Downton Abbey when the Oscar-winner joins the cast as Lady Cora's mother, Martha Levinson. And today, the cast stopped by Anderson Live to reveal what it was like working alongside another (props to original H.B.I.C. Dame Maggie Smith) living legend!

PHOTOS - Inside Downton Abbey Season Three

"We didn't know what to expect because this is a Hollywood legend," said Jim Carter, who plays Mr. Carson. "She just rolled up her sleeves and was one of the gang instantly, absolutely instantly. She was one of the gang but with much better quality of gossip."

Cooper also asked about Highclere Castle (which stands in as Downton Abbey) and found out that the owners are still very much living there. "It is lived in by the Carnarvon family," Hugh Bonneville (who plays Lord Grantham) said, adding, "So it's a little bit of life mirroring art, so it's a bit spooky some times."

RELATED - Is Maggie Smith Leaving Downton?

Julian Fellowes, who created Downton Abbey, knows the family and Elizabeth McGovern (who plays Lady Cora) says that Julian has "deemed many of the stories from the family."

But one story you couldn't make up involved the Egyptian exhibit Highclere castle was hosting during production of season three -- one that MacLaine, who has been very vocal about her past life experiences, felt was incredibly inaccurate.

Carter recalls, "At Highclere Castle, there is a big Egypt exhibition because Grandfather Carnarvon would discover King Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt and Shirley went to visit it and thought a lot of it wasn't particularly authentic because she had lived there. She slept with Tutankhamun and she remembered it very well."

Anderson Live
airs daily and Downton Abbey premieres January 6 at 9 p.m. on PBS.

Oscars Flashback '06: Weisz's Oscar and Baby Bump

Actress Rachel Weisz may now be married to the reincarnation of 007 himself, but back at the 2006 Oscars she was pregnant with her beautiful baby boy, Henry.

ET spoke to Weisz, who seven months along, ran into some issues getting a dress ready for the big night.

Other stars talk red carpet maternity fashion: Claire Danes

"My friend Narciso Rodriguez... he made me two different dresses."

Luckily for Rachel, friendship with an iconic American fashion designer has its benefits. One of which being rushed orders.

"He just made them last week, yeah. And he fitted them again yesterday!" Weisz remarked. "Bump keeps growing!"

In other celebrity baby news: Channing and Jenna are expecting!

That is quite the predicament. But it didn't stop Weisz from looking gorgeous on Oscar night, baby and all. Weisz would win herself a statuette that night, but it wasn't the first thing on her mind.

"Well I hope I definitely go home with the baby!" Weisz joked to ET.

Even on the day she would later win her first and only Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in The Constant Gardener, Weisz knew to put the baby first. Sounds like Henry's got a pretty good mom.

It's anyone's guess as to whether Weisz will be able to repeat that Oscar magic without her lucky baby on board, but she might like her chances. Rachel is nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in The Deep Blue Sea (2011).

President Obama Fights Tears as He Addresses Nation

President Barack Obama addressed the nation moments ago to respond to the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Having trouble composing his raw emotions, the president wiped tears streaming down his face.

He said, "I offered Governor Malloy my condolences on behalf of the nation" and vowed to give the community "every resource" they need to recover.

Referencing other mass shootings making headlines, President Obama said, "We've endured too many of these tragedies in the last few years. Each time I hear the news, I react not as a president, but as a parent. That was especially true today. There's not a parent in America who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief as I do. The majority of those who died today are children……they had their entire lives ahead of them- birthdays, graduations weddings, kids of their own."

Tonight, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will be extra grateful to embrace their two daughters, Sasha and Malia. "[We'll] hug our children a little tighter and tell them that we love them," he proclaimed. "For as blessed as [some victim's families] are to have their children home tonight, they know their innocence has been taken."

He calls for all of America to "extend a hand to those in need…in the hard days to come."

Jon Stewart Says Hugh Grant is Least Favorite Guest Ever

Looks like Hugh Grant, 52, and Jon Stewart, 50, won't be crossing paths again soon if Stewart can help it -- The Daily Show host revealed in a recent interview that not only is the British actor his least favorite guest ever, but that we won't be seeing him on his hit Comedy Central show ever again.

Grant appeared on The Daily Show in December of 2009 to promote his romantic comedy Did You Hear About the Morgans? opposite Sarah Jessica Parker, and though there were no signs of visible tension between the two during the televised interview, according to Stewart, Grant displayed diva-like behavior when he didn't like the clip provided by the film's publicist.

"He's giving everyone s*** the whole time, and he's a big pain in the a**," Stewart told Stephen Colbert in an interview for a fundraiser for the Montclair Film Festival in New Jersey. Grant reportedly complained, 'What is that clip? It's a terrible clip,' to which Stewart replied, "Well, then make a better f***ing movie."

He concluded that he would "never let" Grant back on The Daily Show.

During the candid chat before a sold-out crowd, Stewart also admitted to nearly quitting the show when he took over for Craig Killborn in 1999.

"I walk in the door, into a room with the writers and producers, and the first thing they say is, 'This isn't some MTV bull****.' ... And then I was told not to change the jokes or improvise," he recalled about initially feeling unwelcome. "[I told my agent] get me the f*** out of this. These people are insane ... I had to be talked down from a moderately high cliff ... What I did not realize is, a lot of the people who worked there were a**holes."

Report: N.M. Men Plotted to Kill Justin Bieber

News came out of New Mexico Wednesday of a plot to murder pop sensation Justin Bieber, according to a report by Albuquerque news station KRQE.

The station, which sources a police investigation, alleges that a plot was hatched by two prison inmates and one of their nephews to murder Bieber at a sold-out show at NYC’s Madison Square Garden.

RELATED: Justin Bieber on Interacting with Hysterical Fans

According to the station, a New Mexico prisoner named Dana Martin, serving out two life sentences for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl, enlisted the help of former fellow inmate Mark Staake and his nephew Tanner Ruane to carry out four murders. Two of the reported targets were Justin Bieber and his bodyguard.

KRQE reports that Martin is obsessed with Bieber, and actually has a tattoo of the singer on his leg.

They go on to report the details of the planned murders, which involved strangling the victims with a paisley tie before ultimately castrating them.

KRQE then states that what ultimately foiled the plot was Martin himself inexplicably turning in his co-conspirators. Staake was reportedly arrested in Vermont on outstanding warrants, while his nephew made it to New York, where police reports obtained by KRQE allege he was arrested with "murder tools and pruning shears." Additionally, recorded calls between Ruane and Martin reportedly indicated Ruane's dismay that he was unable to carry out the murders.

But while several of Jones' projects hold the honor of winning Oscars, Tommy Lee won his only personal statuette at the '94 Oscars for his supporting role as Samuel Gerald in The Fugitive.

In the press room following his victory, Jones was asked whether he thought the Oscar would make a difference for his career going forward. "Of course it does. You get considered for more parts. Probably offered a few more. You get -- it certainly represents a growth in one's creative life. The most important thing about it."

The answer in hindsight seems like an understatement for the celebrated actor, who would go on to star in mega-franchises like Men In Black, as well as critical hits like In the Valley of Elah and the aforementioned No Country For Old Men.

While he often takes roles that are more serious in nature, much like his role in the fugitive, Jones doesn't shy away from a chance to lighten the mood. Responding to how his Oscar would affect his ego, Tommy responded, "not at all, as long as they'll let me take it with me every shot that I'm in."

Jones will be looking for another Best Supporting Actor nod this year as he shares the screen with Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln. Following JFK in 1991, if nominated it would mark Jones' second Supporting Actor nomination for a presidential film.

The Beekman Boys on their 'Amazing' Win

Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge pulled off a surprising upset in Sunday night's Amazing Race finale, winning the million dollar prize despite trailing the pack during much of the second half of the race, and narrowly avoiding elimination multiple times. ETonline catches up with the winners to talk about the finale and their perspective on the race.

ETonline: Congrats on winning. Do you feel like the ultimate underdogs?

Brent: We feel like a million bucks!

Josh: It was an amazing journey the entire race. Every leg of the way was a race for us. And it's kind of just surreal now that it's over. We never told a single person – we never told our family, we never told our parents, we never told any friends, or employees, or anyone the outcome. So it was so much to fun to have the people we love sort of watch the race in real time and run it in real time with us.

ETonline: Throughout the race, even when you were coming in toward the back of the pack, and having bad luck along the way at certain points, did you feel like you were going to win?

Brent: One thing that living on the farm has taught us is, you never count your chickens before they hatch. So I would never say that we felt we could win, but we never felt like losers. We knew that the only thing that we had to do was win in the leg that counted, and that only meant not getting out on any particular leg along the way. And that's what we did – that was our strategy going in, and that's what worked for us.

ETonline: It definitely did. So last night in the finale, how did it feel when the other three teams, who arguably were all pretty physically fit and didn't seem to need an extra boost, decided to make an alliance to exclude you?

Josh: I think that that's actually just a natural dynamic of the race. Actually, of life. They hadn't seen us in several legs, we'd been on a whole different race than they were on, and they became fast friends, so we were outsiders re-joining them. And I think it was a natural reaction. It was certainly demoralizing when we first heard it, but then immediately after, it was incredibly motivating.

Brent: And as the twins told us right after the race, it was never an alliance to exclude us, it was just an alliance to help them win. That's the way they conceived it.

ETonline: And it probably made sense in the same way that you two were working with Abbie and Ryan, it seems like it makes sense to try to make friends with people because then they're sticking with you and not necessarily getting ahead of you.

Brent: Right, it's always good to have your competitor within your sight.

Josh: Also with Abbie and Ryan, I think a lot of people were confused by, you know they felt that the last two teams were just getting together and hugging it out, but in reality it was a really strategic thing for us to stay together. Because we knew that the only chance for either of us to succeed, was that we had to eat into that time lag as much as possible. So by working on the tasks together, we actually did accomplish that, and people can see that by the time Brent and I left for Spain, we were only three hours behind the next team, versus 14 1/2 hours behind in Moscow.

ETonline: That's a good point. Last night, during the dog food challenge, it seemed like the twins were getting really personal, but was that more joking, in reality, than it seemed like it was on TV?

Brent: Oh, absolutely, it was good-natured trash-talking. And actually, we used that against them in the midst of that, because we quickly realized that they couldn't keep up their zingers and actually finish the task at the same time. And we were much more skilled at doing two things at once, so we just continued to let them trash talk, to throw them off of what they should have been focusing on.

ETonline: That was pretty smart. Going into the final challenge, it was pretty cerebral, so did you feel like you were well-suited to that, Josh?

Josh: I guess I realized that the advantage I had was when I figured out that it was purely going to be a process of elimination challenge. The advantage I had was that I figured that out. The disadvantage was that I realized how hard that was going to be, the process of elimination, I didn't realize that there were 1,000 different combinations. That was a little soul-crushing when I realized that. And I think you see on Lexi's face, she realized it too. But there was no option, either I was going to sit there and wait for the other ones to go through those 1,000 combinations or I was going to do it.

ETonline: Was it hard to pull the flag up that pole, was it physically hard to keep doing that?

Josh: Yes, I wound up with blisters on my hands for the next few weeks.

ETonline: I wanted to ask both of you, what is the most important life lesson that you take away from the race?

Brent: You know, I think that the race, especially when you watch it on television played back at you, really is so symbolic of life itself, you know, the ups and downs and being able to roll with what's coming your way. And dealing with other people, and dealing with your own relationship, it's like a perfect representation of what we all go through in our lives every single day.

Josh: Just condensed, compressed, and add in a million dollars.

ETonline: So, Josh, have you quit your job? Are you both living on the farm full-time?

Brent: We haven't gotten our check yet. (Everyone laughs)

Josh: It's all happening now, the rest of the world found out last night, so we're working things through.

ETonline: I was actually thinking about that -- if all of a sudden you were sprucing up the farm and spending all this money, then people would probably figure out that you had won.

Shonda Rhimes Talks Katherine Heigl Greys Anatomy Emmy Snub

Shonda Rhimes and her Scandal star Kerry Washington are the focus of Sunday's all-new episode of Oprah's Next Chapter, and in addition to talking about the importance of their addictive Thursday night series, Rhimes looks back on one of her more frustrating professional moments.

In 2008, Katherine Heigl notoriously pulled her name from Emmy contention, saying that she didn't feel the material she was given that year warranted consideration. "On some level, it stung," Rhimes tells Oprah Winfrey. "But on some level I was not surprised. When people show you who they are, believe them. I carry that with me a lot. It has served me well."

Winfrey then goes on to ask Rhimes what accomplishment she's most proud of. "I'm most proud of the fact that I have figured out how to exist as both a creative person and artist and a businesswoman and a manager," she says.

"Because those two things do not go together. For a long time I really had a hard time with the idea that I was supposed to be this person who lived inside her head and created things, but also managed a bunch of people and had to lead a group of people."

Rhimes adds, "But those two things came together, and I'm really proud of how that works now."
